Second Wave Idiots

How arguably the most intelligent species on earth has made it this far surprises me when I hear a gal on the radio introducing the second wave of coronavirus infections. As if these infection waves, just like the waves in the ocean, are the result of some unforeseen externality.

The picture above, taken on Hilton Head Island on Memorial Day, demonstrates nobody gave a damn about the coronavirus. As I walked the beach I noticed no change in behavior, no facemasks, no gloves, or any adherence to social distancing. Quite the opposite, people were playing ball like nothing ever happened, huddled in groups of twenty and more.

Clearly, government authority is completely ignored when the rules are not enforced. People only care about themselves, live in the moment, and do not care about the collective interest of humanity.

Not an observation you can blame them for, really, because the constructs of policy we, humans, deploy never stipulate a common goal or interest. And, as the theory deployed determines what can be discovered, in the words of Albert Einstein, we discover the interest in our collective objectives to be as short in attention as the constructs by which they are enforced.

And that is precisely why we cannot rely on the elective morality of humanity to produce the evolutionary outcomes we need.

Simply put:

Nothing has changed since the announcement of the coronavirus pandemic. We have no cure, we have no publicly available impromptu testing, and we have no real understanding of how the virus operates and spreads.

Let me say this again, nothing has changed from two months ago but an artificial reduction of hospitalization through stay-at-home orders, now being lifted.

The second wave of infections does not come from nature, it comes from the ignorance of humanity. And considering the number of greater-fools roaming our planet, expect more waves to follow that affect the survival of all of humanity.

Brace yourself.
