With a growing smirk on my face, I read over Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg’s blog post identifying the changes he intends to make on the social media platform. I am astounded, and then not, to read how the leader of a massive technology company serving three billion people all over the world still ignores the higher-order responsibility he has.
Facebook’s problems are not micro and related to the speeds and feeds of technology, but its implementation of macro.
Any totalitarian monism holding the innate plurality of humanity hostage is bad for the world.
Mark’s article identifies how he aims to serve the internet by offering more messaging features already available on other platforms. The internet, he apparently has not been made aware, is not the constituent you want to correlate your success to, for the internet is not a constituent and is merely a consequential distribution by which people could communicate. Not the same as the cause of the need to communicate with a methodology best suited to enable said communication.
My focus for the last couple of years has been understanding and addressing the biggest challenges facing Facebook. This means taking positions on important issues concerning the future of the internet. In this note, I’ll outline our vision and principles around building a privacy-focused messaging and social networking platform. So, Mark’s opening statement alone (I did read the rest) reveals he suffers from grave depravity of reason stemming from a confounding of consequence and cause (Nietzsche).
Facebook should instead ponder why and how the first-principles of nature deployed to a technology platform best expands the fractal of human ingenuity and capacity. But that would require Mark to have learned some pertinent lessons of humanity and the impact on Facebook’s customers, that transcend technology.
